AAR from GURPS
Setting: A 'matchlocks & magic' setting, set in a semi-historical Europe of around 1600. Using Gurps; slightly reduced mana, so magic is harder than the default.
Exposition: PCs, originally hired to guard a fortified house in Ireland during a rebellion, get seconded to the local forces of the Lord Deputy as they try to retake fortifications from the rebellious locals.
After leading a force of 40 men to clear a road, they deliver those troops to the scene of the siege of a small fort, siezed by the Irish months prior. If it is cleared, it will clear the way north. The defenders seem low on powder, but the fort is fully enclosed, so monitoring their activities is impossible, even from the air.
"Leroyyyy Jennkinss!!"
On PC has acquired an artifact-level item: A completely out-of-tech Sharps buffalo rifle, that can summons its own ammo (but only 2 shots/day). He decides he's going to use this to intimidate the garrison.
The only approach to the landward side of the fort is across a causeway across a muddy moat - and this obstructed by a raised drawbridge. He strides right up it, ignoring the cautions of the sentries he passes on the way. Arriving near the drawbridge, he decides he's going to shoot off the ropes that control it.
He gets one - and then the fort's lone sniper decides to return fire. PC does not see him line up the shot, through a firing port, as he is busy summoning another bullet.
BANG!
The sniper is not especially good, and he knows it , so he aims for center of mass. The bullet flies a bit high - and hits the PC in his helmet, over the left temple. It's a weak helmet, more for show than actual battle, and the lead passes right through, inflicting an instantly fatal wound. His comrades race to save him, but there is nothing to be done.
Not the first PC I have killed, but the first in this campaign.
I have no regrets: This character was played as a 'murder-hobo', going out of his way to kill every vanquished enemy, unless actively restrained by allies.
Live by the murder-hobo - Die by the murder-hobo!
