It was said in the movie that if a man is accused of adultery the wife must prove he is guilty. However, if the woman is accused of adultery she must prove her innocence. Everyone needs to watch it. They dug a hole in the ground, in front of the village. Then they called the people to watch. On the day Soraya Manutchehri was sentenced, the entire village gathered to witness her death. It was 1986 in Kuhpayeh, a small village in the mountains of Iran. Here lived Soraya, thirty-five years old, mother of four children. From the outside, her life seemed similar to that of many other women in the village: a simple home, a family, days marked by work and caring for her children. But inside those walls, reality was very different. Her marriage had become a place of constant tension. Her husband had a precise plan: he wanted to marry another girl from the village, much younger. The girl was only fourteen. To achieve this without losing money, without having to pay support, and without tarnishing his reputation, he found a brutal path. He accused Soraya of adultery. In a small village where everyone knows each other and life is closely observed, it didn’t take much for a rumor to become a certainty. Words began to circulate between houses. Glances changed. Whispers turned into accusations. Soraya tried to defend herself, but she had very little space to do so. She was brought before a local court. There were no lawyers, no trial in the way we imagine today. There were fabricated testimonies, social pressure, and the authority of the men in the village. The decision came quickly. Guilty. The sentence was among the most terrible possible: stoning. That day the village gathered. Soraya was taken outside, to the ground where the sentence would be carried out. Her body was partially buried in the earth, leaving only the upper part exposed. Then the stones began. It was a death designed to be slow. Public. An act meant to serve as an example to all. Among those present were men from the village and members of her own family, forced to participate in the execution according to local rules. When it was over, Soraya’s story seemed destined to remain there, buried with her, among those mountains. For years, the world knew nothing. Then something unexpected happened. A Franco-Iranian journalist, Freidoune Sahebjam, heard the story of what had happened. He decided to collect the testimony and turn it into a book. Thus was born The Stoning of Soraya M. Soraya’s name, which for years had remained confined to a small Iranian village, suddenly crossed the country’s borders. The book was translated, discussed, read in many places around the world. Years later, her story also became a film: The Stoning of Soraya M. But beyond cinema and written pages, what remains is the question her story continues to leave hanging. What happens when justice does not depend on evidence, but on power, fear, and the judgment of the community?
