Back in 2016, Katrina Bookman put 40 cents into a Sphinx slot machine at Resorts World Casino in Queens, New York, and watched the screen light up with a jackpot of $42,949,672. She snapped a selfie beside it, convinced her life had just changed.
When she returned the next day to collect, staff told her the machine had malfunctioned and her actual win was $2.25. The casino offered her that amount along with a complimentary steak dinner as an apology. Bookman, who grew up in foster care and raised four children on her own, turned both down and took the casino to court.
The New York State Gaming Commission backed the casino, citing a notice on every machine reading "malfunctions void all pays and plays." A Queens judge later ruled in the casino's favor, and Bookman walked away with nothing.
