A growing financial crisis inside the Democratic Party is exposing deep cracks between its leadership and its biggest donors. Democratic strategist Julian Epstein says wealthy liberal donors are no longer a guaranteed source of support, calling the pullback a clear “vote of no confidence” in the party’s direction.
The numbers are stark. The Democratic National Committee reportedly has around $12 million in cash on hand — while carrying nearly $16 million in debt from a recent loan. Donor enthusiasm, once taken for granted, appears to be drying up fast.
Speaking on Kudlow, Epstein pointed to several factors driving donor frustration: what he described as misleading narratives around Joe Biden’s mental fitness, the widely criticized execution of Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign, and a party leadership increasingly disconnected from mainstream economic, social, and cultural concerns.
Epstein also turned the spotlight on the donor class itself. He noted the irony that elite donors — often the most ideologically progressive wing of the party — helped push Democrats sharply left, only to recoil when voters rejected those policies. Now, he says, they are withholding funds rather than confronting the consequences of that shift.
The financial fallout from Harris’s failed campaign looms large. Her bid reportedly burned through roughly $1.5 billion in just over three months, leaving the DNC to absorb more than $20 million in unpaid bills — with additional liabilities still hanging over the party.
The contrast is glaring. The Republican National Committee is reported to have roughly $86 million in cash on hand, while Democrats struggle under mounting debt.
The message from donors is unmistakable: Democrats can no longer drift left, lose elections, and expect blank checks to follow.
