Word is spreading that House Republicans may finally have the votes to drop inherent contempt of Congress on Merrick Garland, which means the Sergeant at Arms could physically take him into custody and hold him until he obeys the law. It is the ultimate check on arrogance in office, and Garland has earned it.
For years, he has stonewalled legitimate oversight from the people’s House. When Congress demanded the audio of Joe Biden’s interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur, the same interview where Hur described Biden as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,” Garland flat-out refused. Even after the transcript came out, he kept the audio hidden, hiding behind “executive privilege” like the American people have no right to hear their own president’s voice.
This is not an isolated stunt. Garland’s DOJ has ignored mountains of Biden family corruption while launching political prosecutions against opponents. Parents at school board meetings were treated like dangerous extremists. Pro-life protesters were raided at dawn while violent left-wing agitators walked free. Under Garland, justice is not blind. It is weaponized.
Inherent contempt has not been used in decades because it is the political nuclear option, but sometimes you have to remind unelected bureaucrats that Congress is not a prop in their game. It is a coequal branch of government with the power to act. If the Attorney General can defy subpoenas and hide evidence without facing consequences, he is not just defying Congress, he is spitting in the face of every American citizen.
If this happens, it will be a test. Either Congress will stand up and prove no one, not even Merrick Garland, is above the law, or they will show once again that Washington is full of talk and no fight.
And thank God this corrupt, arrogant man is not sitting on the Supreme Court right now. Imagine a lifetime appointment for someone who thinks he is above the Constitution itself.
