The success of Plymouth colony with the Pilgrims can only be attributed to one thing. The Providence of God. This is seen through the story of a Native American who spoke English that saved the colony. After arriving in the new world the Pilgrims struggled to farm. However, a Native American named Squanto who spoke English and taught the Pilgrims how to farm. The way a Native American knew English before the Pilgrims arrived is quite the Providential story. In 1608 an English merchant named Captain Hunt convinced some Native Americans to board his ship for an opportunity to trade but were then taken as prisoners and sold into slavery in Spain. Providentially, Spanish Monks bought Squanto and taught him both Languages and the Gospel. Squanto longed to return home and the Monks helped him return on the first ship available but it wasn’t until 1619. When he arrived back home Squanto found his village empty as they had all wiped out by disease, yet he was Providentially spared through his capture. One year later the Pilgrims arrived and Squanto greeted them in English. (You could imagine their shock) Gov. William Bradford recorded their relationship with Squanto in his journal by saying: Squanto, “became a special instrument sent of God for our good. He showed us how to plant our corn, where to take fish and to procure other commodities … and was also our pilot to bring us to unknown places for our profit, and never left us till he died.” After being captured from his, sold into slavery, and unable to return for a decade only to find his family dead Squanto could have held resentment for the Englishmen who inflicted this upon him. What an incredible story that parallels Joseph in the Bible. What Captain Hunt meant for evil God Providentially used for good both so Squanto could hear the Gospel and the Pilgrims could be saved.
