Letters From my Dad
Letters are important. I was thinking about how imprtant they are today.
This is the day I met Barry. Once we started to feel it might lead somewhere, we wrote a lot of letters. He lived a couple of states away, so letters were how we mostly communicated.
And when we were engaged and then married, we sent each other cards for birthdays, anniversaries and for no particular reason at all. They meant a lot to both of us.
Barry had kept everything I had written him. I kept everything he had written me. Tney were up in oir bedroom closet. We would take them out sometimes, and just look back and remember.
Then he died suddenly and unexpectedly in 2015. The house fire of 2021 took all the letters along with the entire housr and all that was in it.
Both days were horrible, life altering days. God got us through then and beyond.
But today I celebrate meeting Barry, and when I thought about that, it reminded me of how letters helped to form a bond that was stronger than I imagined while it was forming.
And the closer we became, the more we shared our hearts, our dreans, our ambitions. Anticipation of each letter built, as we realized that we shared so much in common, including our love for our Lord Jesus Christ.
Those letters connected us. We wanted to know more and more about each other. They were a bridge even when we were apart, especially when we were apart.
And as I held that love and loss in my heart this morning, God said to me, "My word is a letter to you and to humanity. In it I share my heart--as much as can be understood by mortals."
Yes, there is history of God's dealings with others, but so did our letters. We shared our history and our history interacted with others.
But in sharing, we opened our hearts to one another. And in God's word He opens His heart to us, and as He does, we can choose to share our heart with Him.
My Father God, my Dad, reminded me that the promises I hold onto, He wrote in the Bible, His letters, for me, for any who would come.
I see the heart of the Father reaching out and often being rejected. He does not spare us from the pain it caused Him.
And it shares the depth of the love He had for us, while we were still lost, arrogant and stupidly prideful. God saw it all, and saw beyond it all, to our heart, and He still cared.
To send His Beloved, Only Begotten Son to us, to face separation from Himself and from Heaven, to be a servant, to be mocked and rejected, to suffer, to bear the sin of the world and pay the price to the very last sin of the very last sinner in His flesh to death, so that a way was made back to Him.
Jesus paid so much so the choice could be offered to all, to be forgiven, to be cleansed, to come to God and be made a new creation in Christ, one of God's children.
It was a task that could only be asked of Jesus and accepted by Him, because that bond was so strong between them and the love was so strong.
That wondrous bond of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, all One God, but in the mysterious way of God, three separate persons. Each tasked with different jobs and responsibilities, yet still One.
Because of Jesus, I can know His voice. But before I came to Jesus, I was learning the voice of God through the Bible.
I can know His voice, because I know His heart--as much as I can as a mere mortal, babe in Christ.
Before I came to Jesus in full surrender, I was studying the Bible in a coffee house led by a Street Preacher named Jim.
I learned a lot of the heart of God through those studies, through His word, His letters. They are so precious to me!
They led me to seek out Jesus and find Him, to repent and surrender to Jesus as my Lord, my Master, my Saviour, my King! And to be forgiven, cleansed, made a new creation in Christ!
Those words are treasures for any who would read them. Even the harsh tones cover the heart of a Creator Who only wanted good for His children, but because love demanded it, free will had to be a part of it, and free will opened the door to death.
That love made a way back. Free will says we must choose that way back or we reject it.
Open the Bible and discover His letters to you. In them is the way of life and the warnings of an enemy who would steal, kill and destroy, who would keep you from those words.
Stay strong! Read God's letters to you and get to know Him by them.
