View MoreJanuary 23, 2026, the 23rd day of 2026 1-23 Here We Stay Hunkering Down The 1st month the 23rd day of this new year. 123. It is not that unusual to have double digit below zero for the low in January, but it usually is overnight and warns up to single digits or higher during the day. At that time most everyone is usually inside and snuggly sleeping, so we hardly notice it, except for how long it takes to warm the house up in the morning. But last night it dropped to -25°F and was still -23°F at 9:30, and now, nearly 10:00 a.m. it is -22°F. It is supposed to slowly rise to -15°F then steadily drop to -27°F. Time will tell, as always. That kind of slow warm up is really brutal. Farm chores still had to be done, no matter the weather. They can wait a bit on really cold days, but not very long. The afternoon and early evening chores will be a bit warmer anyway. Except for the farm chores that we cannot do in advance, the rest of the day--God wlling--we will hunker down, stay inside, drink hot drinks, listen to audiobooks and slightly hibernate. We got the extra things done over the past few days to make this possible. The rest of the week looks cold, but nothing like this in comparison. We will probably pop pop corn later. We never got to it as our last planned hunker down day got interrupted and it never really happened. But this time we will hopefully enjoy a restful day inside--for most of it anyway! Since it is 1-23 I figured I would share Psalm 123, the only book of the Bible that has a 123rd chapter. And it has 4 verses. So that made it perfect for today Plus, especially in this kind of weather we need to remember to turn to God and seek His mercy. "Unto You I lift up my eyes, O You who dwell in the heavens. Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, Until He has mercy on us. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us! For we are exceedingly filled with contempt. Our soul is exceedingly filled With the scorn of those who are at ease, with the contempt of the proud." Psalms 123:1-4 While many in their perfect temperature places will mock us for living in such a place, I say, "how many places can you live that the weather will periodically send the weak ones fleeing?" It always does, sooner or later. It is the ebb and flow of life in the Northwoods. Stay strong! Stay warm! NAN

View MoreJanuary 21, 2026, the 21st day of 2026 Preparing for the Cold Though we cannot prepare for all contingencies, we can prepare for what we can expect. This is true in life in general, but also in things that are a good possibility of coming to pass. They are predicting brutal cold temps for late Thursday night through Saturday, with Friday being the worst. It is not supposed to be as bad as some years, when -25°F was normal for many winter days and -35°F was not that unusual. Night temps ranging from -40°F to -45°F were also normal. Though -55°F was not normal, it did happen multiple times. Any temperature double digits below zero is not pleasant, but on those cold years it is what could be expected and we prepared for it beforehand, physically and mentally. It is why so many woodstoves were common up here. It is almost impossible for regular heating systems to keep up with that kind of cold, no matter how well you are insulated. But throwing another log on the fire, and keeping it going in a good woodstove and even then we often needed to crack open a window for a bit, just to let in some cooler air. Many people only used their woodstoves for the worst of the winter, but it was a mainstay for us during those terribly cold years. Our Winters can vary significantly year to year. Temperatures rise and fall, precipitation as well. We go through short cycles and longer ones that affect weather patterns. Since we have been spoiled by our warmer winter cycle, and many people moved up here during that cycle, what looks to be coming on Friday is bad enough. With an expected low of around -26°F and an expected high of -12°F, means most of the day will be no where near that high. This whole week has been pretty cold, but that day needs some extra preparation scheduleing for it. Get things ready beforehand and plan to just hunker down, if possible. Of course farm chores have to be done morning and evening, with checks throughout the day, no matter what. Prayers are a part of this whole process, because God is always a part of our lives. If it is warmer or colder we are still prepared. At least today started in the single digits for a change and got to be 15°F, pretty nice. So we had a better day to get more done in preparation. Tomorrow is supposed to be colder than today, but not as cold as yesterday. We are taking it day by day, thankful for what we have and what we have learned to help in all the various weather situations. Stay strong! It is always easier to enjoy harsher weather when you are prepared. NAN

They are not just for those answered prayers or to express our gratitude in general, they are for specifics. Very often people don't want to thank God for the little things that make our days easier, because they don't see God in the circumstances. Some think it would be arrogant to imagine God would bother with us and the little things in our lives. Or they won't accept that God was involved in another's life when He did not prevent the same issues in their life. But when we are spared a bad outcome or we experience close calls, we should praise God, not another, especially luck. But many, without really thinking about it, give glory to good luck instead of God, or they blame bad luck when things don't go well for them. Either way luck is getting the credit and the glory. When we give credit to luck we do not turn to God in eithe circumstance, or learn from either. God's help is more obvious at certain times. But His help is less obvious when He seems to withhold His help. We cannot understand why. So we may ignore all the help as anything but luck. And we may ignore all the hard times as anything but bad luck. It is easier that way. We don't have to account for God in either, as giving or rejecting help. The problem with this is that we will usually glorify luck, not even thinking about it. Instead, we need to look at our life as connected to God at all times, in every moment, and live like that. I will use a few examples that most of us have faced both sides of in the Northwoods. Those moments when the deer jumped away from our vehicle instead of in front of it, thank God, not luck. And in the times the deer hits the vehicle instead of avoiding it, call out to God for help. Don't glorify bad luck. Those times the car slides on an icy patch, but you righted yourself and nothing was hit, thank God, not luck. The times the icy roads got the better of you and you slid into something, call on God, do not glorify bad luck. Those times that you catch the dish as it slips from your hand, thank God. The times that you have to pick up the pieces, call on God, don't curse your luck. There are so many times in our lives that God moves unseen. We don't even know what He has saved us from. We thank God because He is doing so much. But quite often we see the help, but we still do not acknowledge that it was from God. We need to change our mindset. Most of the world will say those times were good luck. They do not really stop to think how a concept can be affecting us for good or bad. God is over it all. Our choices can affect a lot of things, putting us in situations God would have kept us from, if we had chosen differently. But even then, God does not abandon us! He is waiting for us to turn to Him! Stay strong! Thank God and glorify Him, do not glorify luck. NAN
