Health Benefits of the Pawpaw Fruit
I was just watching a video about a fruit that doesn't grow in the western US, that I have never eaten but would love to try. It is the Paw Paw fruit.

Why America Forgot Its Largest Native Fruit
18 views
Pawpaw once fed Indigenous communities, rural families and a nearly provisionless American expedition. Today, America’s largest native fruit is missing from most grocery stores—even though the tree still grows across much of the East.
Most people assume Americans simply stopped liking pawpaw. This documentary follows a different story: the fruit survived, but a food system built around long shipping, uniform harvests and shelf life filtered it out. Then much of the breeding work that might have helped pawpaw return was lost.
From Cherokee and Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) food knowledge to William Clark’s 1806 journal, early American breeding orchards and today’s regional growers, this film traces how Asimina triloba moved from seasonal food to the edge of American memory.
You will discover:
• Why pawpaw was once preserved and carried beyond its short harvest.
• What Lewis and Clark’s expedition actually recorded in September 1806.
• Why a ripe pawpaw has only days—not weeks—to reach an eater.
• How America lost much of its early pawpaw breeding work.
• Why modern growers are building a different path back.
Pawpaw also has genuine limitations: wild flavor can vary, the fruit contains large seeds, pollination can be difficult and ripe fruit bruises easily. This is not a story about a perfect crop destroyed by one villain.
FORAGING AND FOOD-SAFETY NOTE
Correct identification is essential. Collect only where it is legal and clean, with the landowner’s permission. Use fully ripe fruit from a trusted source, eat only the pulp, discard the skin and seeds, and remember that individual tolerance varies.
