Two in three Canadians live within 100 km of the US border, by the 2021 census. Not 90%. On November 25, 2025, a House of Commons committee heard the old line, often cited, that puts 90% of Canadians within 100 miles or 100 km of the border. The MP who repeated it, Andrew Lawton of Elgin, St. Thomas and London South, said in the same breath that he did not know whether it was statistically valid. Statistics Canada had already counted. This is the documented story of the three rulers used to measure where Canadians live: what the census counts within 100 km, what a newspaper reports Statistics Canada said about 100 miles, and which ruler the 90% belongs to. It then follows the ground and the record out of the crowded strip, from Six Mile Lake and Ontario's Clay Belt to Saskatchewan's cropland, the Lachine Canal, the railway cut at Neys, Rogers Pass and the Leduc oilfield, and to Calgary and Edmonton, two cities far outside the band. In this video: - 2016 census: 66% of people lived within 100 km of the southern Canada and US border, on about 4% of Canada's territory - 2021 census: the same share, 66%, as Statistics Canada reported in March 2023 - 1817 to 1820: the water boundary through the St. Lawrence and the Great Lakes, 2,100 km long, is first surveyed - 1818: British and American commissioners fix the boundary along the 49th parallel from the Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains - 1903 to 1931: settlement in Ontario's Clay Belt is aggressively promoted, and an estimated 806,000 hectares are cleared and farmed - 1930s: most Clay Belt settlers abandon their land and the region - 1821 to 1825: the Lachine Canal is built around five km of white water on the St. Lawrence - 1871: the promise of a land connection to British Columbia, later fulfilled by the Canadian Pacific main line through Rogers Pass - 1947: after Leduc No. 1, Alberta's oil industry shifts north and the Edmonton area becomes a petrochemical and distributing center - 2021: Saskatchewan farms account for 43.1% of Canada's cropland - 2021: Calgary counts 1,306,780 people, more than 200 km north of the 49th parallel, and 33.3% of them are immigrants - 2021: 73.7% of Canadians live in the country's 41 large urban centers Key figures: 66% of Canadians within 100 km of the southern border, 76% within 100 miles as reported, more than 90% within 150 miles as reported, and about 4% of Canada's territory holding the two in three.
