Here’s a description you can paste in. It follows the drive order most people use coming north through the canyon, then across the basin.
I drove through some of the quietest towns in northern Wyoming: Thermopolis, Worland, Basin, Greybull, Lovell and Powell, plus a stop at the old Pioneer School.
The day started in Wind River Canyon, where US 20 drops through the Owl Creek Mountains between rock walls and old railroad tunnels. The Wind River runs the length of the canyon and becomes the Bighorn River once it opens into the basin at Thermopolis. From there the road runs north through small main streets, grain elevators, old schools and long stretches of open country that most travelers never turn off for.
