The Night a US Fighter Pilot Fought a UFO | 1948

On October 1, 1948, Second Lieutenant George Gorman was flying a P-51 Mustang over Fargo, North Dakota, when he spotted a brilliant light moving through the night sky. What began as an attempt to identify an unknown object turned into a nearly 27-minute aerial pursuit. Gorman later said the object accelerated, climbed, turned, evaded his attempts to intercept it, and even appeared to make passes directly toward his aircraft. Gorman UFO DogfightGorman was not the only witness. Pilots aboard a nearby Piper Cub and personnel at Fargo's Hector Airport also reported seeing the mysterious light. The incident attracted the attention of Project Sign, one of the U.S. Air Force's earliest investigations into unidentified flying objects. Investigators eventually pointed toward a weather balloon, Jupiter, and the difficulty of judging distance and movement against a dark, featureless sky. Gorman remained convinced that what he encountered behaved as though it were under intelligent control. Gorman UFO DogfightIn this episode of Forgotten History, we examine the Gorman UFO Dogfight, J. Allen Hynek's role in the investigation, the origins of Project Blue Book, and how one strange night over Fargo became part of the much larger story of America's fascination with UFOs. Nearly eighty years later, the terminology has changed from UFO to UAP, but the central question remains remarkably familiar: what exactly are military pilots seeing in the skyWritten and hosted by Michael Droberg.
