Why did Vera Lynn sing for soldiers during World War II?

The other half of it was a BBC radio request programme, Sincerely Yours, which began in November 1941 and read out messages from families to servicemen abroad. At its peak she was getting up to 2,000 letters a week, and the Imperial War Museum now holds over 600 of them.
