What’s it like seeing the Alaska Megatsunami damage? (Tracy Arm Fjord)
This story is part of a longer episode about working in Alaska after the tsunami: https://youtu.be/2ZjqSoU51oU
In Southeast Alaska, the landscape records its history in scars. Operating out of Juneau, this episode follows a local plumber and heating technician whose work depends on helicopters to reach some of the most remote infrastructure in the region. Flying with Coastal Helicopters, he services isolated repeater sites, cell towers, mining operations, and wilderness camps—while navigating a life shaped by weather, terrain, and constant risk. During a routine flight, the journey detours into Tracy Arm, a narrow, deep-water fjord carved by ice and framed by sheer granite walls near the Sawyer Glacier. It is here that a massive landslide recently triggered one of the most extreme tsunamis ever recorded, sending a wall of water more than 1,600 feet up the mountainside—placing it among the largest known tsunami run-ups in history, comparable to the legendary event at Lituya Bay.
At 5:26 a.m. on Aug. 10 2025, a mass of rock with a volume 24 times larger than that of the great pyramid of Giza crashed down the mountainside, sending a wave of water 1,578 feet up the opposite wall and setting off a tsunami that roared down the fjord.
The force of the wave erased entire forests, stripping vegetation down to bare rock. Evidence of the destruction remains visible from the air and at the mouth of the fjord. Kayakers camping nearby survived only by chance. Through firsthand access and aerial perspective, the episode examines the intersection of daily life and deep time geology, revealing what it’s like to live and work in a place where the land itself can suddenly move—and where the most powerful forces on Earth operate far from view.
