"Absent from the body, present with the Lord." It is printed on funeral cards. It
is said out loud, gently, to people in the worst week of their lives. And it is
eight words lifted out of the middle of a paragraph.
Read the paragraph and something turns up that almost nobody mentions. Four verses
earlier Paul writes: we do not want to be unclothed, but clothed upon. Those are
tailoring words β€” ekdysasthai is to strip a garment off, ependysasthai is to put
one on over the top. And in the verse before that, a third word: gymnoi. Naked.
Paul's fear in this passage is being found bodiless. The verse used to prove the
bodiless state sits four lines after the man says he does not want it.
There is more. The two words in verse eight that no English Bible translates
literally β€” ekdemesai and endemesai β€” are not words about consciousness at all.
They are travel words, built on demos, a people or a homeland. To be out of your
own country, and to be at home in it. The verse tells you WHERE. It does not tell
you whether you are awake.
Two readings, and this one splits the Reformation down the middle. Calvin's very
first theological work, written in 1534 before he was famous, is a tract against
soul sleep. Luther, in his commentary on Genesis, describes the soul sleeping and
not feeling its sleep. Tyndale argued the same against Thomas More. This study
gives each reading its strongest case and takes no side.
And the man who wrote the verse made tents for a living. That is not decoration.
It is the first word of the chapter.
