In 1946, just one year after World War II ended, the United States Navy launched Operation Highjump, one of the largest Antarctic expeditions in history. Nearly 4,700 men, 13 ships, aircraft, submarines, and an aircraft carrier were sent to the bottom of the world under the command of Admiral Richard Byrd.Officially, it was a training and mapping mission. But the timing has never stopped raising questions.Nazi Germany had explored Antarctica in 1938. Rumors later spread about a hidden German base known as Base 211. Operation Highjump ended earlier than expected. Admiral Byrd later warned about possible threats coming over the poles. Then, only months later, the modern flying saucer phenomenon exploded in 1947 with the Kenneth Arnold sighting and Roswell.Was Operation Highjump simply a massive Navy expedition?
