The battle at LZ X-Ray became famous through We Were Soldiers. But the fighting in the Ia Drang Valley did not end there.
On November 17, 1965, men of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry were moving toward Landing Zone Albany when North Vietnamese forces struck from the tall elephant grass.
What followed became one of the most devastating American encounters of the Vietnam War: 155 U.S. soldiers were killed and 124 wounded.
This is the story of LZ Albany — what happened after X-Ray, how an American column was caught exposed, how small groups fought to survive, and why this chapter of Ia Drang remains far less remembered than the battle that came before it.
Forgotten War Stories explores the real battles, soldiers, decisions, and details that movies often leave behind.
