Black Hills Steam - Mallets on the Black Hills Central

In the Black Hills of South Dakota near Mt Rushmore, we find the oldest continuously operating standard gauge excursion railroad in the US. A pair of Mallet 2-6-6-2T steam locomotives power this popular train over the former CB&Q's Keystone Branch. We visited in July of 2026 and were able to catch both Mallet locomotives in action: the 108 and the 110.
