My grandpa never flew, never went through TSA, never visited a big city, never ate at McDonald's and never went to Disney World.
Maybe that's why he lived 96 years?

The C-141 Starlifter was far more advanced than any civilian airliner of that time and had inertial navigation systems and an automatic hands off landing system.
There were several stationary Coast Guard Weather ships in oceans to monitor the weather and aid aircraft and ships in navigation.
The ship between San Francisco and Honolulu in the North Pacific was Ocean Station November. The USCGC Pontchartrain was one of the ships, a 255-foot Lake-class patrol gunboat built by the U.S. Coast Guard ship yard at Curtiss Bay, Maryland, and commissioned 28 July 1945. The ship was redesignated as a high endurance cutter in 1948.
Every aircraft would contact the ship as they traveled to or from Honolulu. It was important to be on course when penetrating the Hawaiian Air Defense Identification Zone.
The ship depended on celestial navigation and would need help during long periods of overcast skies. That's why they loved Starlifters. We could give them their exact location.
Crews also loved airliners because stewardess would talk to them.
With GPS and volunteer weather reporting from commercial ships, those lonely weather ships became mostly obsolete.

Charles Jackson French (born Sept 25, 1919) is an American war hero born an orphan from Foreman, Arkansas who learned to swim in the Red River at the age of eight. He had first enlisted in the navy in 1937 and had completed his enlistment, moving to Omaha, Nebraska where he had family.
With the attack on Pearl Harbor, French went to the closest recruitment office, and on December 19, 1941, re-enlisted in the United States Navy.
It was on September 5, 1942 during World War II, when United States Navy Petty Officer First Class Charles Jackson French swam through the night for 6 - 8 hours pulling a raft of 15 wounded sailors with a rope around his stomach through shark-infested waters after the USS Gregory was hit by Japanese naval fire near Guadalcanal.
If the wounded men had floated ashore they'd be taken as prisoners of war. French volunteered to swim the raft away from shore. He asked for help to tie a rope around his waist and towed them to safety.
One of the sailors told him it was impossible that he would only be giving himself up to the sharks that surrounded them. French responded that he was not afraid. He was a powerful swimmer, and swam all night, 6 to 8 hours until they were eventually saved by a landing craft.
French successfully brought the men to safety on the shores of the Solomon Islands. Once French was identified, he became a national hero! For this action, French received a letter of commendation from Adm. William F. Halsey Jr. in May 1943. United States Navy Petty Officer First Class Charles Jackson French was the first black swimmer to earn the Navy Medal for his heroism in 1943. He was named Hero of the Year by The Chicago Defender.
A depiction of French's heroic actions was memorialized on War gum trading cards, on calendars, and his story was told insyndicated comic strips. He made public appearances across the country to promote the sale of War Bonds. French is also recognized by the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
French was posthumously award the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his heroic actions in 1942. The award was presented last week on May 21, 2022 at Naval Base San Diego during a Training Pool Dedication Ceremony.
Petty Officer First Class Charles Jackson French passed away on November 7th, 1956 at the age of 37. French is buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California. Lest We Forget.

Two Uvalde city police officers passed up a fleeting chance to shoot a gunman outside Robb Elementary School before he went on to kill 21 people inside the school, a senior sheriff's deputy told The New York Times.
That would mean a second missed opportunity for officers to stop Salvador Ramos before the May 24 rampage inside the school that killed 19 children and two teachers. Officials said that a school district police drove past Ramos without seeing him in the school parking lot.
The unidentified officers, one of whom was armed with an AR-15-style rifle, said they feared hitting children playing in the line of fire outside the school, Chief Deputy Ricardo Rios of nearby Zavalla County told the newspaper.
Rios said he had shared the information with a special Test House committee investigating the school massacre.
Uvalde police officials agreed Friday to speak to the committee investigating, according to a Republican lawmaker leading the probe who had begun to publicly question why the officers were not cooperating sooner.
"Took a little bit longer than we initially had expected," state Rep. Dustin Burrows said.
On Thursday, Burrows signaled impatience with Uvalde police, tweeting that most people had fully cooperated with their investigation "to help determine the facts" and that he didn't understand why the city's police force "would not want the same." He did not say which members of the department will meet with the committee, which is set to continue questioning witnesses in Uvalde on Monday.
