I see wher... View MoreHmm, so I watched as much of Baldwin's interview as my stomach could take. The stench of bullshit was just too much for me. Ok, so now the official party line is "the gun just went off". I see where this is going now, blame the manufacturer and absolve yourself of any guilt. I, for one, don't buy it for a second. Couple of reasons: First and foremost, you don't point a firearm at someone unless you intend to shoot them. No, really, it is just that simple. That is the top safety rule in just about any gun safety course. It is the last line of defense to keep you from being stupid. How do we know he didn't obey this rule? Well, there is a dead person who shouldn't be. Strike One. Second, It was his responsibility to know the firearm was loaded with live ammunition. That is another important safety rule that gets regularly stuffed into the head of anyone who handles firearms. You never take anyone's word for it. Somebody hands you a weapon, you clear it yourself to be sure the ammunition is out. By his own admission he didn't do this. Strike two. And last, he claims he didn't pull the trigger. He was monkeying around with the hammer and it just went boom. Ahem. Very unlikely. Is there a chance the sear was broken or modified? Yes, a very very slim chance that happened. It will be easy enough to prove or disprove when the pistol is dismantled and inspected by whomever the Santa Fe PD has for this kind of work. It isn't rocket science. The Single Action Army revolver is a robust and well understood design. Anyone who is interested in the detailed nuts and bolts of how it works, I suggest Jerry Kuhnhausen's book "The Colt Single Action Revolvers vol 1 & 2." It is more a manual for gunsmiths, but it is just about everything you might want to know about how it works. Suffice to say, I doubt it just broke. A more realistic explanation is that he was holding the trigger down while playing with the hammer.... essentially, the firearm did exactly what it was supposed to do under those conditions. Can't really claim it was defective when it works exactly how it was designed to work. Strike Three. Oh well, the media meat-puppets are working overtime to give one of their buddies a pass.
