University of Michigan researchers have developed a way to destroy tumors using nothing but focused sound waves. No surgery. No chemotherapy. No radiation.
It's called histotripsy. The technique works by creating tiny bubbles inside targeted tissue that rapidly expand and collapse, mechanically breaking apart the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy cells. Dr. Zhen Xu and the late Dr. Charles Cain pioneered the technology over years of rigorous research. In 2023, the FDA authorized it for treating certain liver tumors—and it's already in use.
What makes this remarkable isn't just the science. It's that a university research project became a real clinical option. Histotripsy expands the toolkit available to cancer patients, offering an alternative when conventional treatments carry their own burdens or limitations.
It won't work for every cancer or every patient. Its application depends on tumor type, location, and individual circumstances. But that's not a flaw—that's how medicine actually advances. One new tool at a time.
