🎃 Stingy Jack: The Irish Legend of the Wandering Lantern
Before pumpkins, Irish people carved frightening faces into turnips at Halloween.
And behind the famous jack-o'-lantern is a story about a man called Stingy Jack.
According to one version of the Irish folktale, Jack tricked the Devil but paid a terrible price.
When he died, neither Heaven nor Hell would accept him.
Condemned to wander the darkness, Jack carried a burning ember inside a hollowed-out turnip to light his way.
His wandering lantern became closely associated with Halloween folklore.
Irish and Scottish emigrants later helped carry vegetable-lantern traditions across the Atlantic, where pumpkins became the familiar choice.
From a hollowed-out turnip to one of Halloween's most famous symbols.
