A 29-year-old registered sex offender from Oregon was charged with three felony forgery counts after attempting to enroll at Maple Grove High School in Minnesota as a 17-year-old homeless student.
"Makayla Ray" Craig, whom Maple Grove police identified as a male, submitted enrollment paperwork under the name Molly Lennox Fox.
Craig claimed to be a homeless 17-year-old from Oregon with no identification documents and cited the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act to demand immediate enrollment.
Because of the lack of ID, the school placed the applicant in an online program rather than in-person classes.
Police located Craig the next day in a public parking ramp and made an arrest. Craig never completed enrollment and was never present on campus or in any online classes as a student, according to Maple Grove police.
He is a registered sex offender in Oregon following a 2023 conviction in a case involving a minor and has been out of compliance with registration requirements. Oregon court records also show a prior conviction related to attempting to enroll in a high school in Albany, Oregon, while posing as a younger student. Craig has used multiple aliases.
