Democrats have found their outrage again. When President Trump promised a $5,000 "Trump Dividend" to every adult citizen if Republicans hold both the House and the Senate, the left lined up to call it a bribe.California Gov. Gavin Newsom called it "taxpayer-funded blood money." State Democratic parties called it vote buying.Fine. Let's apply their standard evenly. If promising voters money in exchange for winning an election is a bribe, what do you call a party platform built on promising free everything?Free child care. Free buses. City-run grocery stores. Free college. Government health care for all. That's not a one-time check. That's a permanent bill, and it never stops coming. In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani's own campaign priced universal child care at $6 billion a year. Fare-free buses at $800 million a year. And that's one city. Now scale that ambition up to Washington. Here's the receipt Democrats never mention. The national debt just passed $40 trillion. The federal government ran a deficit of nearly $2 trillion in fiscal 2026 alone. We are not a country with money lying around. We are a country borrowing to pay interest on what we already borrowed. And who would run all this free stuff? The same government that gave us VA wait lists, the Healthcare.gov launch disaster, and a Postal Service that loses billions every year.Washington doesn't do "free" well. It does expensive, slow, and late.To be fair, conservatives should hold Trump's promise to the same test. Any dividend has to be paid for, not borrowed. That's an honest question. But Democrats aren't asking it honestly. Their problem isn't the spending. It's who gets the credit. When they hand out benefits, it's compassion. When Trump does it, it's corruption. That's not a principle. That's a double standard. What's the bigger threat to your wallet, a one-time $5,000 check or a permanent promise of free everything?
