8. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.1 Timothy 4:8; KJV. Paul warns Timothy about future false teachers who will depart from the faith and spread deceptive teachings. He encourages Timothy to nourish himself on God's Word and devote himself to spiritual growth. Paul explains that while bodily exercise has some value, godliness benefits believers both now and for eternity. Timothy is instructed to be an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, while remaining devoted to Scripture, doctrine, and the faithful use of his spiritual gifts. In today's verse, Paul is not saying exercise is bad; the Greek word gymnasia (Strong's #G1129) refers to practices of bodily abstinence, such as restrictions on marriage or certain kinds of food. In simple terms, those who restrain the body but experience no change in the inner man—meaning sin is still in control—have no hope for eternal life if sin is not overcome in Christ. These are not my words; I consulted three different commentaries: John Gill, Matthew Henry, and Albert Barnes. All three stated that godliness is an inner transformation that brings sin into subjection to Christ. A person who lives this kind of life benefits in areas pertaining to godliness now, faces no regrets at the time of death, and is guaranteed eternal life afterward—not because of anything they did while alive, but because it was promised by Christ as a gift that cannot be begged for, bartered for, worked for, or purchased, but only received. Practical application for believers: know God's Word, pursue godliness, be thankful for everything, stand firm in your faith, be an example, and keep growing spiritually. Lessons learned: spiritual growth requires discipline, godliness has eternal value, spiritual gifts must be used faithfully, sin must be dealt with, and Christ is with you to overcome every sin; He paid the price so you could receive God's eternal reward. Amen.
