At 110 years old, James Clayton Flowers is recognized by longevity researchers as the oldest known living man in the United States, and his life story is a remarkable chapter in American military history. Born on Christmas Day in 1915 in rural Virginia, Flowers served during World War II and became a second lieutenant before being assigned to Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama. There, he helped train the groundbreaking Tuskegee Airmen, teaching cadets the science behind flight, including aerodynamics, engine mechanics, and aviation physics, at a time when Black Americans faced widespread racial discrimination in the military. The Tuskegee Airmen went on to make history through their service in the war, and their contributions were later recognized with the Congressional Gold Medal. After military service, Flowers worked in construction and education, building a life that extended far beyond the battlefield. Now living in Las Cruces, New Mexico, he is preparing to celebrate his 111th birthday on December 25, 2026. Despite receiving honors for his service, Flowers once reflected on war with a powerful statement: “I don’t want anything to do with war.” His journey is a reminder of the courage, determination, and quiet contributions of the people who helped change American history. What an extraordinary legacy to reach 111 years while carrying such an important piece of history.
