February 13, 1945, marked the liberation of the Gross-Rosen concentration camp, though even in liberation there was continued suffering.
By the time Soviet forces arrived, the SS had already begun evacuating the camp. SS guards transferred at least 44,000 prisoners, many of them Jews, mostly on freight trains and on foot under brutal death march conditions. Many died from lack of food and water, and SS guards killed prisoners who became too weak to continue.
An estimated 120,000 people passed through Gross-Rosen, and at least 40,000 died in the camp or during its evacuation.
We remember the victims, honor the survivors, and teach the lessons of the Holocaust to build a more tolerant world. #NeverAgain #GrossRosen
