Democratic socialism and a vacuum cleaner have a lot in common. They both suck.
But only one of them does the job it was built to do.
A vacuum pulls the dirt out of your carpet and leaves the floor cleaner. That's the deal, and it keeps it.
Democratic socialism pulls the money out of your wallet. It promises "free" health care, "free" housing, "free" everything. But nothing is free. You pay for it, your kids pay for it, and what comes out the other end is poverty for everyone except the government.
We don't have to guess how this ends. History already ran the test.
Venezuela sits on the largest oil reserves on earth, and socialism still wrecked it. Inflation hit 130,000% in 2018. By 2019, 94% of Venezuelans lived in poverty. About 8 million people, roughly a quarter of the country, packed up and left.
Cuba has had 67 years to make it work. Its power grid has collapsed nationwide again and again since 2024, and rolling blackouts now top 20 hours a day. Up to 2 million Cubans have fled since 2022.
Then there's Italy. No dictator, no revolution, just a Western democracy that spent decades growing its government. That's the "soft" version, and here's where it lands.
Some of the highest taxes in Europe. Government-run health care. A sprawling welfare state. Waves of mass migration. Italy's debt now equals about 137% of its entire economy, on track to be the highest in the eurozone, and growth has crawled along under 1%.
The young are voting with their feet. Between 2013 and 2022, 352,000 people aged 25 to 34 left Italy, chasing the jobs and paychecks they couldn't find at home.
Italy elected a conservative government in 2022, and it's still digging out. Once that machine gets plugged in, it's hard to unplug.
Thomas Jefferson warned in 1816 that taking what one man earned to hand to another violates the first principle of a free society: every man keeps the fruits of his own labor.
That's the promise DSA is asking you to trade away.
Why do you think the "free stuff" pitch still sells so well to young Americans, and what would actually change their minds?
