Nidal Hasan shouted "Allahu Akbar" as he killed 13 soldiers and wounded 32 more at Fort Hood in 2009. On December 3, at Fort Hood itself, he is scheduled to die by firing squad — the first U.S. military execution since 1961.
This week, Al Qaeda's Arabian Peninsula branch threatened to kill American captives if the execution goes forward — a threat aimed straight at the United States, confirmed the same day the War Department stood by its plan.
Secretary Pete Hegseth has said the execution will be livestreamed: "We'll make sure that people are able to watch it." Speaker Mike Johnson told CBS he worries a broadcast could become a terrorist recruiting tool and that he would not watch.
The execution time was set to mirror the time of the 2009 attack. (Sources: Washington Examiner + CBS, Oct 12, 2026.)
