The driver who fatally hit 20 year old Pakistani student Samia Malik has avoided jail after a judge recently suspended his prison sentence.This happened on North East Road in Hillcrest, a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. Samia had been kneeling in the middle of the road for about four minutes at around 11 p.m., with CCTV showing her hands making what the court described as a “praying motion.”Ashton Friend, 20, initially thought he had hit a kangaroo. The court heard he was driving below the speed limit, was not affected by drugs or alcohol, and had been checking his rearview mirror shortly before the collision.He pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and leaving the scene. He apologised to her family and said he would carry the weight of his failures for the rest of his life.
