It is the allegation that has followed Ilhan Omar for a decade: that her 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was an immigration arrangement because Elmi is her brother. The claims first surfaced in Minnesota's Somali community and conservative blogs during her 2016 campaign.
Omar has denied the allegation from the start, calling the claims "disgusting lies," and no evidence proving them has ever been made public. The Post reports Elmi now lives in Britain, lecturing at the University of Bristol. Former officials note a DNA test would settle the question, though Elmi is under no obligation to take one from abroad.
A former ICE lawyer told the Post that criminal marriage-fraud charges would in any case be time-barred, since the five-year statute of limitations expired around the couple's 2017 divorce. That is why investigators are focused on her naturalization file instead.
A federal judge has now signed a search warrant in the case. Omar has not been charged and maintains her innocence.
