The CDC says the share of extensively drug-resistant cases went from 0 percent in 2011 to 2015 to 8.5 percent in 2023.Those strains resist the five usual antibiotics, and there is no approved oral drug left for them. Most U.S. cases from 2011 through 2023 were in adult men. In the later years the resistant cases were mostly white men, and doctors say a large share are men who have sex with men. It passes during gay sex when fecal matter gets into the mouth, including through oral-anal contact.
