π A report about a pit bull chained to a tree and doused with petrol prompted a former firefighter to start something.π Rescue Ink was established on Long Island in 2007 by tattooed bikers, including bodybuilders, bouncers, a retired detective and a former firefighter. It is a non-profit organization.π Members look into reports of animal cruelty, collect evidence and refer cases to police and the ASPCA, which carry out any seizures. They do not have legal powers of their own, and say that simply turning up is the most effective part of the job.π΄ Their rescues over the years have included dogs, cats, horses, pigs, ducks, turtles and once a boa constrictor. National Geographic made a six-part series about the group in 2009.π Sources: The New York Times, People, Newsday, National Geographic, Animal Wellness Magazine
