Philippians 1:21. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Paul begins by thanking God for the believers in Philippi and expressing confidence that God will complete the work He began in them.
He prays that their love will abound in knowledge and discernment.
Although Paul is in prison, he rejoices because the gospel is advancing.
He declares that Christ is the focus of his entire life.
Paul encourages the Philippians to live worthy of the gospel, stand united in the faith, and remain faithful even during suffering.
He reminds them that believing in Christ and suffering for His sake are both parts of the Christian calling.
In today's verse, "To live is Christ," Paul declares that every part of his life—his work, purpose, identity, and actions—is an expression of Christ living through him.
His life is not merely dedicated to Christ; Christ is the content and meaning of his life.
Living for Christ means growing in holiness, serving others, and witnessing to Christ's transforming power.
Regarding "To die is gain," death is not a loss for believers; it ends earthly suffering and begins an eternal life with Christ.
Death ends our struggle and unites us with Christ.
In practical application, when you follow Christ and difficulty comes, do not assume that you have been abandoned by God.
Many believers before us suffered for Christ.
God can use hardship for good, as adversity is an opportunity for God to show His power.
Lessons learned: God finishes what He starts, love should be growing in you, and when Christ is the center of your life, there is no fear of death.
Live a life worthy of the gospel and stand united with other believers. Amen.
