The cartoon asks the right question. Why do people think Democrats will make life more affordable when blue states are already the most expensive places to live?They will not. Hawaii is about $773,000. Massachusetts is about $645,000. New York is about $596,000.Texas is about $342,000. Mississippi, Alabama, Ohio, and Indiana sit well under $280,000.Rent follows the same map. Hawaii and California are at the top of the country. Iowa and the Deep South are at the bottom.The cost of living index puts Hawaii, Massachusetts, and California at the head of the list. Mississippi, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Alabama sit at the cheap end. Those are not accidents of weather. Those are policy.Blue states tax more. California's top income tax is 13.3 percent. Texas has none. They regulate more. They make it harder to build. Power bills follow the same pattern. California electricity is among the highest in the country. Texas keeps it cheaper because it still treats energy like a product, not a sermon.People vote with a moving truck. They leave California and New York for Texas, Florida, and Tennessee. That is the market talking. Then Democrats tell working people the high prices are someone else's fault.Democrats campaign on affordability the way they campaign on everything else.
