This cartoon gets a laugh. The numbers behind it should not.In 2024, Canada's government health system ended the lives of 16,499 people through what it calls Medical Assistance in Dying, or MAID. That same year, about 15,400 Americans were killed in gun homicides.Read that again. The United States has roughly eight times Canada's population. Per person, Canada's MAID rate is nearly nine times America's gun homicide rate.That is not a punchline. That is a tragedy.And the line keeps moving. When MAID was legalized in 2016, it was sold as a narrow option for people whose death was already near. In 2021, Ottawa opened it to people who are not dying at all. Unless Parliament acts, people whose only condition is mental illness become eligible on March 17, 2027.Now put that next to how Canadians actually get care. The median wait from a family doctor's referral to treatment is 28.6 weeks, according to the Fraser Institute. That is more than six months of pain, worry, and conditions getting worse.So picture the choice. Treatment is months away. Death is available.Follow the money too. Canada's own Parliamentary Budget Officer estimated MAID would cut health care costs by about $149 million in 2021 alone after the expansion. Nobody has to say the quiet part out loud for the incentive to exist. When the same government that rations your care also runs the exit, death starts to look like budget management.That is how a culture of death gets normalized. Not with a vote to kill the vulnerable, but with paperwork, waiting lists, and the quiet suggestion that this is just the next reasonable step.Our Founders wrote that life is an unalienable right. A government that cannot deliver care on time has no business delivering death on demand.This is what happens when government controls your medicine. It is just wrong.Should a government that controls your health care ever be allowed to run assisted suicide too?
