Maine is not a safe laboratory for the same package that wrecked bigger cities. Susan Collins is not anyone’s favorite warrior. She is the incumbent standing between that seat and a challenger who talks like the country’s problems are that it is not radical enough. Three points in a poll is not a parade. It is a margin that disappears if the people who work the docks and the woods stay home.Senate control is math. One lost New England seat is a committee gavel and a confirmation fight handed to the other side. Voters who want a border, energy that works in winter, and fewer lectures from Washington do not have to pretend Collins is perfect. They have to decide whether the alternative is acceptable. In this race it is not.Show up. That is the entire strategy. Comment sections do not hold a chamber. Ballots do. If Maine wants the Senate to stay out of the hands of people who treat enforcement and parents as the enemy, the voters who say that in private have to say it in a booth. Three points is a warning.
