John Thune holds a 53–47 Senate and still cannot walk a citizenship-to-vote bill across the floor. That is not math. That is a leader who treats the one demand his voters actually make as a scheduling conflict. Proof of citizenship is not exotic. It is the minimum. A majority that will not use itself is a majority for hire.South Dakota did not send him to Washington to manage the feelings of people who think an ID is oppression. The SAVE fight has been the test. Every week it sits is another week of sloppy rolls and lectures about “access.” Thune can whip or he can explain. There is no third job description that counts.Nobody fires a Senate leader from the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue. Voters do it. Until then the pressure is the point: put the bill up, pass the bill, or own the failure in public. A 53-seat edge wasted on process is how you lose the next map. Thune can be the man who locked the elections or the man who hid from them. The conference already has the votes. Use them.
