A fight between Rep. Brandon Gill and political streamer Hasan Piker began after Gill criticized Piker about his background and recent comments about U.S. foreign policy. Piker was born in New Jersey to Turkish parents and spent much of his childhood in Turkey. After Piker argued in an Axios interview that the United States had caused more deaths through terrorism than al-Qaeda, Gill called him a poster child for ending birth tourism and accused him of working against America.Piker responded to Gill with only four words: your wife is Indian. Gill is married to Danielle D’Souza Gill, the daughter of Indian-born conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza. Danielle herself was born in the United States. Gill responded that his wife was American, born in America to American citizens, and said that her Indian ancestry was fundamentally different from what he was criticizing about Piker. The exchange quickly became a larger argument about immigration, ancestry, birthright citizenship, and what makes someone American. Gill went further by describing Piker's parents as foreign invaders, criticizing Piker's politics and wealth, and referencing the controversy involving Piker's treatment of his dog. Piker's original response, meanwhile, drew criticism because pointing to Gill's wife's Indian ancestry did not directly address Gill's argument about Piker's circumstances of birth.
