Liberal is the wrong word now. Leftist is the right one.I remember when a liberal meant someone who hugged trees and wanted clean air. That person is hard to find. What replaced him is a movement that cheers late abortion, shrugs at a baby born alive, and talks about tearing up the Constitution.Andrew Cuomo signed New York's Reproductive Health Act on January 22, 2019. It opened the door to abortion after 24 weeks if a doctor says the mother's health is at risk. Eight states and Washington, D.C., now have no gestational limit at all.Ralph Northam, then governor of Virginia, explained the next month what that can look like. If a mother is in labor, he said, the infant would be delivered, kept comfortable, and resuscitated only if that is what the mother wanted. Then a discussion would ensue.In January 2025 the House passed the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act 217 to 204. One Democrat voted yes. The Senate blocked it 52 to 47. Every Democrat present voted no. They would not require the same care for a child already born that any other newborn gets.That is not hugging trees.The Democratic Socialists of America put the rest in writing this summer. Their platform calls for abolishing the Senate and replacing the president and the Supreme Court with an executive and a court picked by Congress. DSA co-chair Megan Romer was asked if they want the Senate gone. She said true.A real liberal believed in reason, debate, and individual freedom. Those words are on the headstone for a reason. Cancel culture buried open debate. Race quotas buried color-blind merit. Speech codes buried free speech.Liberals did not lose an argument. They got replaced. The people running the Democratic Party now are leftists. They want a different country, not a cleaner river.Call them what they are.Do you still call today's Democrats liberals?
