“The Shoes at the Fence” — Poland, 1944 As prisoners were marched to the gas chambers, a mother stopped and knelt to tie her young son’s shoe. A guard shouted, but she didn’t move faster — she simply said, “He mustn’t fall.” Another prisoner, watching from behind, said later that moment haunted him more than any scream. “In that place of death,” he said, “a mother still cared if her boy tripped.” When the camp was liberated, thousands of children’s shoes were found stacked high — tiny, worn soles that still seemed to echo footsteps that never reached home.
