On September 19, 1988, Israel looked beyond its borders and reached for the stars. With the successful launch of Ofek 1 aboard the Israeli built Shavit rocket, Israel became only the eighth nation in the world capable of independently launching a satellite into orbit. This was not simply a technological achievement. It was a declaration of Israeli determination, ingenuity and independence. A small nation, surrounded by enemies and forced to fight for its survival, had built its own satellite, developed its own rocket and launched it from its own soil. Israel did not wait for permission. Israel did not accept limitations. Israel created the impossible.
