GILEAD IS IRAN ! Margaret Atwood didn’t invent Gilead out of thin air. She took real history — including the 1979 Iranian Revolution — and put it on screen. Compulsory covering, morality police, women stripped of rights almost overnight, public punishment as spectacle. She even namedrops Iran in the book’s historical notes: “Iran and Gilead: Two Late Twentieth Century Monotheocracies.” Watch The Handmaid’s Tale and then look at streets in Iran. A lot of it isn’t dystopian fiction. It’s documentary with different costumes. I placed photos from The Handmaid’s Tale next to real scenes from Iran. Look at them side by side. In every pair, there is almost no difference between the series and what actually happens in Iran.
