Watching an 84-year-old senator get prompted by an aide and a colleague just to vote “Aye” on the farm bill is embarrassing. After months away following a fall and pneumonia, his return supplied the single deciding vote that pushed the measure through committee 12-11.
Forty-one years in the Senate is more than enough. When a member needs help simply to participate in a markup, it raises real questions about fitness for office and whether Americans are still getting vigorous representation.
Term limits would stop scenes like this. The country deserves energetic lawmakers who can actually do the work instead of being guided through one more vote.
