In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Tom Homan the Presidential Rank Award for Distinguished Service. That is the highest honor a career federal executive can get.Homan ran ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations. ICE said that in the three years he was at the helm, his shop removed more than 920,000 illegal immigrants. Obama's administration formally removed more than 3 million people in eight years.They were not all violent criminals. They were not all the worst of the worst. In 2014, ICE removed nearly 316,000 people. About 44 percent of them had no criminal conviction at all.Nobody said boo to Obama. Democrats did not flood the streets. Immigrant activist groups called Obama the Deporter in Chief, and the party still stood with him. The Washington Post wrote, "Thomas Homan deports people. And he's really good at it." Homan was a hero.Fast forward a decade. Same Tom Homan. President Trump is deporting millions of illegal immigrants. Now there are mass protests and outrage. Now the same man is treated like a villain.The law did not change. The oath did not change.What changed? Democrats opened the border. Customs and Border Protection recorded 10.8 million encounters from 2021 through 2024. They let them in because they want them. They defend them. They set up sanctuary cities to take care of them and protect them from immigration law enforcement.Chicago, New York, and California built systems to house them and keep ICE away. They call it sanctuary. It is a shield against the law.That idea that ICE should only do its job for violent criminals is absurd. Officers took an oath to uphold the law. The law covers every person here illegally, not just the ones Democrats find convenient.If you enforce the law under Obama and protest when Trump does it, the law is not the law. It is a talking point.It is insanity.If Obama could honor Tom Homan for these deportations, why is the same work treated as a crime when President Trump does it?
