Yehuda Aharon Widawski, Israel’s oldest Holocaust survivor, has passed away at the age of 107.
Born in Poland in 1919, he survived the Łódź Ghetto, Auschwitz-Birkenau and forced labour, while his parents and most of his siblings were murdered in the Holocaust.
After rebuilding his life in Israel, Widawski dedicated decades to preserving Jewish memory. Beginning in the late 1970s, he repeatedly returned to Poland to locate and restore Jewish cemeteries and mass graves, helping to identify thousands of graves and ensuring that communities destroyed in the Shoah would not be forgotten.
In 2012, he was chosen to light a torch at Yad Vashem on Holocaust Remembrance Day in recognition of his extraordinary work.
