๐ฎ๐ฑ THIS DAY IN THE HISTORY OF ISRAEL | SEPTEMBER 14, 1948
On September 14, 1948, only months after the establishment of the State of Israel, David Ben-Gurion moved to integrate the Palmach fully into the newly created Israel Defense Forces.
The young Jewish state was fighting for its very survival, but Ben-Gurion understood something essential: Israel could not remain a collection of separate fighting forces. A sovereign nation needed one national army under one command.
The Palmach had played a crucial role in defending the Jewish community before independence and during the War of Independence. Its fighters and legacy would become an important part of the IDF.
Different backgrounds. One people. One army.
From the struggle for Jewish independence came the IDF, entrusted with defending the State of Israel and the Jewish people.
Then and now, Israel stands because generations have been prepared to defend it.
