"I love you. Wait for me, I'll be there soon." That's what Jeanette Toczko said to her husband Alexander moments after he died in her arms, in their San Diego home, on June 17, 2015. Jeanette and Alexander had known each other since they were 8 years old, when they became childhood sweethearts. They married in 1940 and stayed rarely apart for the rest of their lives. Alexander served in the Navy, and the couple later moved to San Diego in the early 1970s, where Alexander discovered a lifelong love for golf, playing nearly every day at his local course. In May 2015, Alexander suffered a fall and broke his hip. His health declined quickly afterward. Hospice brought a bed into their home so he could stay close to Jeanette until the end. Their actual 75th wedding anniversary was June 29, but with Alexander fading fast, the family decided to celebrate it early. They brought in balloons and flowers and marked the milestone together in the room, with Jeanette by his side. According to their daughter, Aimee Toczko-Cushman, when Alexander died, Jeanette held him and told him she loved him, and asked him to wait for her, promising she'd be there soon. She kept that promise. Less than 24 hours later, on June 18, Jeanette died as well, never spending a single day without him. The couple was laid to rest together at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego. Their daughter later said the hospice nurse present in their final hours called it one of the most remarkable things she'd ever witnessed, two people who had spent nearly 75 years together, taking their last breaths only hours apart. #archaeohistories
