“Tell me where the Ukrainians are, or I’ll shoot you.” A russian soldier held a gun to the head of Yurii Kuznetsov, a traumatologist from Izium. By then, Yurii had already spent six months saving lives in a hospital basement. When russian bombs began falling on Izium in March 2022, his home was destroyed and two shells hit the hospital. He stayed. His brother had a Group I disability and could not walk. His 84-year-old mother was also there. She died in June. Yurii turned the hospital basement into an operating room. For six months, he and the nurses treated around 800 people. About half were wounded. Every serious wound meant surgery. They operated under bombs and artillery fire. On May 9, russian forces shelled residential buildings and 17 wounded people were brought to the hospital at once. They even delivered four babies in that basement. Then russian soldiers stormed the hospital. One pointed his rifle at Yurii and demanded to know where the “Ukrainians” were. “Search. There’s nobody here,” he replied. Izium was liberated on September 10, 2022. Yurii went to the local police station, where russians had tortured people. Ukrainian passports were scattered everywhere. Then a Ukrainian SSO soldier arrived, climbed onto the roof, removed the russian flag and raised the Ukrainian one. Yurii received the Order “For Courage”, III Class. He still lives in Izium. He still works in the same hospital. They tried to break him. He stayed and saved lives.
