With sharp claws, agility and speed, fishers are formidable predators who feed primarily on small and mid-sized mammals, such as snowshoe hares, squirrels, mice and even porcupines. They can even rotate their hind legs 180 degrees as they run through the forest in search of prey. Over trapping and habitat loss nearly wiped-out fishers in the U.S. in the 1930s. Although they have faced many threats in the past, federal, state, Tribal and private partners are working to ensure that these fierce creatures will survive the challenges ahead.
