Apparently, Governor Kathy Hochul has confirmed that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is coming to the 25th-anniversary 9/11 memorial at Ground Zero, despite strong objections from Councilwoman Vickie Paladino, retired Port Authority police officers, and some families of 9/11 victims. More than 102,000 people have signed a petition asking Mamdani to stay away. Critics point to his appointment of Ramzi Kassem, his appearance with Hasan Piker, and his initial refusal to condemn Piker’s past statement that America deserved 9/11. Mamdani later called that statement objectionable and reprehensible.
Mamdani says he plans to attend to honor the victims, survivors, families, and first responders. Supporters say attending is part of his responsibility as mayor and argue that public officials should not be excluded from the memorial. Critics say Ground Zero is sacred ground, his presence would cause more pain for some grieving families, and their request should be respected.
